Marking the return of Outrageous Fortune star Robyn Malcolm to the stage, Silo Theatre
charters the absurd, sometimes stern-face portraits of married life from the pen of Samuel
Beckett, as Happy Days plays the Herald Theatre from August 20th.
Amidst blazing light and scorched grass, Winnie is half-buried in a mound. Still she greets
each day with a smile, rummaging around in her handbag, applying makeup, brushing her
teeth and nattering away to her husband. She’s always got a loaded revolver stashed away
should it all get too much. Hers might not be the ideal life, but should a happy day come her
way she’ll seize it with both hands. Buried slowly beneath the mire of an indifferent universe,
Winnie offers the bravest response possible. She persists.
The play sees the return of Robyn Malcolm to Silo Theatre’s fold; having performed back in
2007 alongside Outrageous Fortune cast member Frank Whitten in The Cut, another bleak,
darkly exploration of human existence. Though not on screen as Cheryl West, lately Malcolm
has taken to a new role – that of a spokesperson for the preservation of land that has been
earmarked for mining as part of government plans to raise money.
Malcolm joins Silo Theatre stalwart Cameron Rhodes, playing Winnie’s husband and
currently one of the mainstays of the theatre company in the past year with star turns in
Loot, The Threepenny Opera, the Short+Sweet Festival 2010 and the upcoming production
of Stephen Sondheim’s Assassins, while Michael Hurst returns to the directing role after the
success of 2009’s Loot and Life Is A Dream .
