Like all online communities, we occasionally encounter dishonest people who will try and defraud you of your hard earned cash. We recommend that you always use common sense and that you follow these tips to help keep yourself safe:
The happysheep "For Sale" categories are designed to make it easy to buy and sell with people from your local area. We strongly recommend that you meet face-to-face and exchange cash for the item(s) that you're paying for.
If you have to send items by post or courier rather than arrange a face-to-face exchange, we strongly recommend that you wait until you've received the money before sending the items. Don't send items before you've received payment.
We all love grabbing a bargain, but if something really does look too good to be true, it's probably is. Be extra careful, and pay with cash on pick up.
If you suspect that you might have been ripped off, please report it to us immediately so we can help protect other members of the happysheep community. We also recommend that you make a report to the NZ Police.
When using the Internet to meet new people, whether it's for friends or something more, it's very important that you keep yourself safe.
We strongly advise against including information in your listing that might make you personally identifiable. This includes your surname and your address.
If you decide to meet someone that you've been exchanging emails with or chatting to online, we strongly recommend that you meet in a very public place where there are lots of people such as a cafe, restaurant or bar. Tell a friend or family member where you're going and what time they can expect you back. If possible, ask a friend to call or text you during the meeting to check in with how you're doing.
It's important that you visit your new flat or rental in person before making any kind of commitment to renting. Never send money for a bond or rent before you've visited the property and met the owner or rental agent.
When agreeing to rent a property it's important that you sign a tenancy agreement that details the dates and terms of the tenancy, including how much the rent and bond is, and what furniture and appliances are included.
A standard tenancy agreement can be downloaded (PDF) from the Department of Building and Housing.
Before signing any agreement make sure that both you and your landlord/agent record and agree on any previous damage to the property and that you keep accurate records of all payments that you make.
When checking out a property (especially a flat) it's always good to bring along a friend, or at the very least, tell someone where you're going.
Discriminating in the area of tenancies is prohibited by both the Residential Tenancies Act the Human Rights Act. Know your rights and make sure you're getting a fair deal.
For more information about renting we strongly recommend checking out the Department of Building and Housing web site.
